Rules of Engagement For Dealing with Reporters

  1. It’s not the question—it’s the answer. You never see the question on TV.
  2. It’s not the reporter – it’s the audience you are speaking to.
  3. Use and be used. They are using you so you get to use them to get your message out.
  4. They can’t use what you don’t say.
  5. Think before you speak—there is no dead air on TV.
  6. Never lie.
  7. Never say “no comment.”
  8. Say “I don’t know.”
  9. Pass them on.
  10. Be a good source.
