As part of a citywide effort to strengthen arts learning for all Dallas youth, The Dallas Independent School District's Board of Trustees recently made a commitment to provide 45-minute long classes in both music and visual arts instruction. These classes will be delivered each week by certified arts specialists to all Dallas ISD elementary schools students. This action comes after 12-plus months of community planning, led by the Dallas Independent School District, the Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs, Big Thought and included area arts and cultural organizations, parents, teachers, principals and arts supporters from across the city. Big
Thought, formerly Young Audiences
of North Texas, is one of the largest and strongest
non-profit arts education partnerships in the nation. Based
in Dallas, it has been empowering communities through
education, arts and culture since 1987. Big Thought offers
seven innovative arts and culture-based programs,
instruction, performances, workshops, cultural excursions,
artist residencies and teacher training. Its programs
reach a diverse group of youth; helping them to work in
teams, solve problems, and get along better with others.
Big
Thought has been a huge success. It has helped children
do better in school, teachers have learned how to better
integrate the arts in classrooms, and the bonds between children
and families have been strengthened.
