Art Is Education

Cleveland Integrated Arts Collaborative (CIAC) has launched the Art is Education initiative to encourage students to reach their fullest academic potential and foster learning in and through the arts. By establishing the arts as an essential component of the school district’s standards-based literacy instruction, Art is Education will help foster the creativity and innovation students will need to compete in the 21st century economy.

Cleveland Integrated Arts Collaborative, a consortium of over 30 arts and cultural organizations, was spearheaded by Young Audiences of Northeast Ohio (YANEO) and partners closely with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD). In a city already enriched by a thriving arts and cultural community, Art is Education is a comprehensive initiative designed to improve skills in literacy and the arts by engaging CMSD students in these resources.

Art is Education is expected to serve more than 3,500 third graders in the 2007-08 school-year. The arts-infused curriculum builds on the success of a spring 2007 pilot with more than 500 students, which demonstrated marked participant improvement in both literacy and arts skills.

This is just the beginning. Committed to ensuring that each and every CMSD student receives the tangible benefits of an arts-integrated curriculum and is prepared to compete in our increasingly competitive workforce, Cleveland Integrated Arts Collaborative seeks to ultimately expand Art is Education to reach all 52,000 students in the district.
