AEI

The Arts Education Initiative at Berkeley:
Changing the Culture of Education through Arts Integration In the Preparation of New Teachers and School Leaders

Begin at the beginning.

That is the philosophy behind the work of the Arts Education Initiative (AEI). The AEI works with educators from colleges and universities, K-12 schools and the arts community to foster extensive integration of arts all along the professional development “pipeline”— from encouraging young men and women to enter the education field, through their pre-service preparation, and into their early years of experience in the classroom and schools.

Regardless of age or grade level, a successful learning environment is one that fully integrates the arts to make key concepts and skills more accessible for all students, regardless of differences in learning styles. The AEI knows this is as true for educating new teachers and school leaders as it is for K-12 students.

The AEI is committed to working with member institutions to develop high quality arts-integrated professional education programs for new teachers and school leaders. A major goal of AEI is to see this commitment extend to additional institutions in California and throughout the country.
