Spring 2007 Artist-Teacher Partnership program:
Making Math Meaningful Middle-Schoolers, Measurement, and Murals

This sixth grade class began exploring how they could use their knowledge of geometry and measurement to design and create handmade tiles based on historical references.

Students started by identifying and describing a polygon. They then learned how to draw geometric figures using a variety of tools, and used their design template to copy a geometric pattern on a clay tile.

Tiles

After the students completed their final tiles designs, they planned their mural layout. They used their knowledge of fractions to calculate the dimensions of the final mural by adding the individual tiles and grout.

Using fractions, students calculated the amount of grout needed to complete the mural. After polishing, students were able to admire their finished artwork.
