An interview with Sheila Jordan Superintendent of Schools, Alameda County
What are the key ingredients for pushing this [arts movement] forward?
[[As] a county superintendent, we're working with the districts to enable them to strengthen what's happening in their districts and, by using the resources of the county to leverage the resources that exist out there from higher-ed to arts organizations to business, we're building a county wide effort.] The whole emphasis of the arts is reaching out and helping people understand that the arts is not just an appendage. The arts are critical to learning and need to be integrated to all aspects of learning. Listen
An Interview with Sabrina Klein
Executive Director of the Julia Morgan Center of the Arts. She created an alliance with the Lincoln Center Institute for Arts in Education Program
Why are the arts important?...
[My son’s] learning is brought out in a positive way by the arts…Rather than being slowed down in work, being somebody who is constantly being taken out of activities because they’re not meeting his needs, I see him taking a leadership role and blossoming…it’s only fair that every child has an opportunity to learn in a way that is most meaningful to him or her. Listen
What is your suggested approach to arts education?
Find out who in the school has the most access to parents…and that person needs to become your first ally.
