"Research shows that a program of arts education taught by qualified teachers improves school achievement and develops skills in creative problem-solving and group dynamics that students will need for success in the 21st century.” - Richard A. Disharoon, Arts Education in Maryland Schools Alliance

Narrowing the curriculum in elementary school deprives students of an important opportunity to develop broad vocabulary and background knowledge necessary for strong reading comprehension later on. That lack of opportunity results in several negative consequences as students move into upper elementary school and secondary grades.

Tips on How to Get on Local TV and Radio to Spotlight Arts Education in your Community

A great way to increase local support and awareness is to have local TV and radio stations cover events by sending them a news release and pitch letter. Inviting them to the events is a good way to get them engaged.

Dear _____,
Arts Education month is right around the corner and Minneapolis schools are gearing up with unique events happening this March.

The Viva City Arts Festival returns for its 5th year of bringing light to the twin cities. The festival, organized by Arts for Academic Achievement will feature students performing original plays that tell a story based in historical Minneapolis. This festival is one example of a city thriving from the benefits of arts integration.

We invite you to attend the festival on March 1, 2008 at 7:30 at Anytown Elementary School, where Superintendent Jane Doe will give opening remarks on the vital role of arts education in local schools.

Please let me know if you plan on attending this event or would like to speak with the event's organizer.

Thank you for your consideration.

Regards,
Jane Doe
